The city of Raleigh wanted to take half of John Mettrey's front yard to widen Lead Mine Road... But instead of paying him, Raleigh officials decided Mettrey owed the city for a retaining wall to keep what was left of his front yard from tumbling into the street. "I was going to end up owing $11,000," said Mettrey...He hired an attorney, in his case George Autry, Jr., ... In the end, the city agreed not only to pay Mettrey $85,000 but also to regrade his driveway so it wouldn't drop so steeply onto Lead Mine Road.
