CSH Law Land Condemnation & Eminent Domain Practice Group recently won a major settlement for the owner of Independence Shopping Center in Charlotte. The North Carolina Department of Transportation agreed to pay $22.5 million in the eminent-domain deal, the largest land settlement ever for the Department.

Independence Shopping Center is located at the intersections of Independence and Conference Drive and Independence and Idlewild Drive.  A plan to speed up traffic in the area surrounding the center will result in building overpasses on one-third of its land.  Many of the center’s stores have closed or moved as a result of the freeway project.
