From professional malpractice to complex and catastrophic injury litigation, Ryan does not shy away for fighting on behalf of his clients. Over the years, he has worked with his clients to reach early resolutions. However, when litigation is unavoidable, he is at home in the courtroom and has significant experience in litigating high exposure personal injury matters, including wrongful death, catastrophic injury, and sexual abuse cases. Serious personal injury matters are not the only focus of Ryan’s practice, he regularly handles defense of professionals, insurance coverage issues, including maritime coverage matters, bad faith litigation, and construction defect claims.
DEFENSE OF PROFESSIONALS
Ryan defends licensed professionals (attorneys, engineers, real estate agents/brokers, and veterinarians) against claims of professional negligence and malpractice made by former clients in all North Carolina Courts and before professional licensing or administrative boards such as the North Carolina Bar and North Carolina Real Estate Commission. Dealing with negligence and malpractice claims is stressful for any professional and Ryan’s goal is to work with his clients to best navigate their situation and the frustrations that such claims can cause.
DEFENSE OF MUNICIPALITIES
Ryan is frequently called upon by local governments to serve as outside counsel and litigate matters on their behalf. Ryan’s representation of local governments includes several officer involved shootings, civil rights litigation, and contract disputes. He has significant experience representing correctional facilities and officers on claims for sexual misconduct, abuse of force, and other civil rights violations. He served as an adjunct professor at Gaston College where he taught civil liability for police officers and correctional officers.
COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION LAW
Ryan enjoys working with HOAs and their Board of Directors. He has worked with homeowners associations, condominium associations, and marina associations and regularly advises them on both day-to-day matters and helps them navigate the litigation process. Specifically, he works with them on contractual claims, defending derivative class action lawsuits, declaratory judgment actions, and breach of fiduciary duty claims.
CIVIL LITIGATION
In addition to his defense of professionals and municipalities, he works with clients on a variety of matters. Ryan’s experience ranges from enforcing judgments, business disputes, and general maritime matters. He has handled several construction defect cases and serious construction site injury claims. He also has significant experience in appellate advocacy before both state and federal appellate courts, including submitting amicus briefs on behalf of interested parties.
