John D. Martin
1959 – 2026

It is with great sadness that Cranfill Sumner LLP shares the passing of John Martin, founding partner of our Wilmington office and a pillar of our firm.

John played a central role in bringing Cranfill Sumner to Wilmington 25 years ago and was deeply committed to the growth and success of that office and the firm as a whole. He was a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend to many, and his influence will live on through the people and culture he helped shape.

“John led with integrity, generosity, and a deep sense of responsibility to our clients, his colleagues, and this firm,” said Ryan Bolick, Executive Chair of Cranfill Sumner. “Our firm is better because of John, and we would not be where we are today without him.”

“I had the privilege of working with John for many years, and he will always be someone I deeply respect, not just as a lawyer, but as a person and a friend,” said Benton Toups, a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. “John set the standard for us and proved time and time again that it is possible to be both a fierce advocate and a complete gentleman.   We are better professionals, and better people, for having known him.”

John was known throughout his career for his sound judgment, his dedication to clients, and his steady commitment to doing things the right way. He believed in teamwork, in earning trust, and in supporting others. These are values that continue to guide our firm today.

John’s loss is felt deeply by all who knew him and worked alongside him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, and we join many across the legal profession in honoring a life and career defined by service, leadership, and integrity.
