Mica Nguyen Worthy’s experience handling space debris cases is featured in the 2026 North Carolina Super Lawyers Magazine.

Mica, Chair of the Cranfill Sumner LLP Aviation and Aerospace Practice Group, discusses her experience representing a family whose home was damaged by falling space debris and her work in filing an administrative claim with NASA.

In May 2024, Mica filed the first-ever space debris claim with NASA on behalf of a Florida family whose home was struck by hardware from the International Space Station. The object tore through the roof though no one was injured. The family claimed approximately $80,000 in damages. NASA ultimately settled the claim before a lawsuit was filed.

The unprecedented case has sparked broader discussion about space-related liability as Earth’s orbit grows more crowded with satellites and debris.

Mica is based in the firm’s Charlotte office and in addition to utilizing her experience in Aviation and Aerospace, she also leaned on the resources of the International Business Law Practice Group for the application of international law.
