Smyth brings more than 30 years of litigation experience to firm
Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog LLP (Cranfill Sumner) today announced that Theodore (Ted) B. Smyth has joined the firm in an Of Counsel position based in its Raleigh office. With more than 30 years of experience, Smyth focuses on insurance and personal injury litigation and has litigated hundreds of cases throughout his career.
Smyth first joined CSH in 1981 and left in 1994 to start his own practice, where he continued to work as a litigator for the past 19 years.

Smyth maintains an AV rating with Martindale-Hubbell, the most prestigious peer review rating that recognizes attorneys who have reached the highest levels of skill and integrity. In 2011 he was selected as Best Lawyers’ 2011 Raleigh Insurance Lawyer of the Year. Since 2007 he has been named annually to Woodard/White’s “The Best Lawyers in America.” Since 2008 he has been listed annually in North Carolina’s Super Lawyers Magazine for Insurance Law. Smyth is an author and frequent speaker across the state in the area of North Carolina insurance litigation.
Active in the local community, Smyth has previously served as President of Hospice of Wake County, President of the N.C. Triangle Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and President of the Tenth Judicial District Bar Association. He currently serves as the Chair of the Insurance Law Section for the N.C. Bar Association for the 2013-2014 term.
A resident of Raleigh, Smyth and his wife Melissa have three daughters.
