John Martin won a defense verdict for a large regional hospital following the fatal shooting of a hospital visitor by an armed hospital security guard.  Expert testimony was offered by both parties concerning the acceptable justifications for the use of deadly force and whether those justifications were present in the shooting of the decedent.  Eyewitnesses testified that, at the time of the shooting, the visitor possessed an open-bladed knife and was charging at the security officer, other staff and was threatening to kill another visitor.  The plaintiffs asked the jury for an award of $3,000,000.00.
